Cardwell Aukerman Photography
Starting out
My LINK began just the same as everyone else’s did. I had no idea what I wanted to do on my LINK and so far all we had done was talk about it. I had ideas and a list of places I wanted to intern at however I had no idea where I would end up. I was scared to send emails because I didn’t want to get turned down. But finally I sent an email to Carol Cardwell at Cardwell Aukerman Studios. Two days later I got an email back asking about times for us to meet. And my god what a weight I had lifted. A week later I was supposed to meet with Carol but ended up being sick on that day. I emailed her and what do you know she was super nice and just asked if we could meet next week. I already had a great idea of what my mentor would be like and it made me all that more excited to go and work with her. When I walked in I was greeted with a smile and a handshake she asked me why I wanted to work here and I answered truthfully I have always looked at pictures and wished I could be there.
Experiences
The magic of working in photography is, I get to go to those places and make those images a reality. She then had me do the strangest thing I’ve ever done before starting a job. She had me take a personality test to see what I was like. Turns out we had the same personality type and she seemed so giddy about it. Two weeks later she had me come in to help out with a photo shoot. The girl we photographed seemed stubborn and all I could think was, is this always how it's going to be? Turns out it was not. A week later was day one of LINK and I was excited to see the true day to day life of a photographer. I came in and started to learn about lighting and camera angles. She showed me how to change the brightness of a light stand. I was in awe of how advanced the little clicker for the light worked and allowed the light to act as a bigger flash. That day I accidentally cut my hand on a steel cube and then crushed my hand with the light when I loosened it without holding it. I was bleeding and freaking out I was going to be fired from my LINK. But Carol being her kind hearted self just ask me not to loosen the light unless I had both hands free to hold it. Then she asked if I was OK. That same day I began the long process of make four advertising videos for Carol that would also act as my LINK project. I took so many video and my god I mean I took so many videos. I then learned some techniques from a video, where Katherine Medina told people about the art of editing and timing.
LINK Project and Final Conclusions
I used these techniques to start my first drafts of each video. Three only featured one of the models we photographed and had to be at or under 30 seconds. Each 3 seconds at most had to be a different clip and man it was hard to figure which one to use. I used royalty free music for the background and eventually changed it so I had to redo all the timings. Over all however the majority of my three weeks was spent editing and helping Carol with day to day tasks such as sending 64 emails. It felt like 200 and my back felt like death after standing at a desk all day. My LINK however was so much fun and I believe that my Mentor and I spending so much time on banter about the state of the world and which history was the coolest to study helped us to become good friends. Thanks to Carol for putting up with me for three weeks of constant questions and distractions.

Work descriptionThe main goals I had in working with Carol was completing my LINK project which also acted as advertisements for Cardwell Aukerman Photography Studios. During the three weeks I worked to make sure that small changes were put in place to change the timing and make sure that the music and video showed off the models and Carols skill as much as possible. Currently my videos are not on carol website however she does plan to use them on her Instagram account. However other jobs included; helping clean out storage spaces and office spaces. Sending emails to customers. Running errands. Assisting with light placement and equipment movement. I also made sure that Carol was not in danger because of traffic or natural hazards, due to her focus on the shoot rather than her surroundings. I also helped train a new employee on how my videos and how my marketing worked.
